Here’s an article that claims that Self-help can make some people worse. That’s not actually the title of the article, of course, far more interesting to put.
Self-help ‘makes you feel worse’
Well, if you actually read the article it claims that self-help can help, in a minor way, those with high self esteem, but why let facts get in the way of a good headline. That’s a minor quibble though, the main findings are that for those who need self-help the most, it’s bad news. As usual.
Canadian researchers found those with low self-esteem actually felt worse after repeating positive statements about themselves……The researchers, led by psychologist Joanne Wood, said: “Repeating positive self-statements may benefit certain people, such as individuals with high self-esteem, but backfire for the very people who need them the most.”
